Case Studies in Finance (The Irwin Series in Finance)
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Education - Europe (01 August, 2002)
Author: Robert Bruner
Average review score:

Bravo to Bruner!
Case Studies in Finance and its instructors manual are absolutely the BEST of their kind in all the years I've been teaching finance and strategy. Bravo to Bruner! I've never seen an instructor's manual so complete. The At-a-Glance section has been very helpful when structuring a course design. Case Studies in Finance and its supplements are being used by the finance faculty at ESADE Business School, in Spain, as a guide to restructure their first year core finance course in the Full-Time MBA programme.

Excellent, made the subject practical
The book was excelleant, but I never knew if the answers I provided were correct, is there no model answers on the case studies that one could check one's answers against. I am a final year MBA student in South Africa with no real previous Finance experience and this book really assisted me in gaining a practical understanding. Please let me know about model answers

The Creation of Reality in Psychoanalysis: A View of the Contributions of Donald Spence, Roy Schafer, Robert Stolorow, Irwin Z. Hoffman, and Beyond
Published in Hardcover by Analytic Press (July, 1999)
Author: Richard Moore
Average review score:

Challenging, infornmative, engaging, very well written.
The Creation Of Reality In Psychoanalysis is a challenging, informative, engaging, exceptionally well written treatise that is a welcome and valued contribution to the growing library of psychoanalytical literature and Freudian studies.

Outstanding Book!
Psychoanalysis has been increasingly influence by constructivist thinking. Various theorists have contributed to the psychoanalytic understanding of the way in which reality is constructed. However, this literature is scattered, confusing, and it is difficult for the casual reader to gain a firm intellectual grasp of the pertinent issues. The author has done a tremendous service by overviewing this complex and often cryptic literature, contrasting the chief theorists, and presenting his own conclusions. A gem of a book that I would highly recommend to anyone who is trying to gain a meaningful understanding of this difficult but vital topic.

Dow Jones-Irwin Guide to Fine Gems and Jewelry
Published in Hardcover by Richard d Irwin (May, 1986)
Author: David Marcum
Average review score:

Excellent information on diamonds and colored gemstones
This is the best book I have ever seen on diamonds, gemstones and jewelry. I contains excellent information on what to look for in each category of gemstones. It also contains great photo examples of properly cut stones and common problem areas. It explains the independent lab grading process and shows how to read the grading reports.

A well researched treasure
One of the best books ever written if you are interested in collecting or investing in diamonds and colored gemstones. Discusses basic gemology, an analysis of the most commonly traded gemstones, colored gemstone and diamond grading with laboratory grading reports, gemstone treatments, pricing cycles, gemstone investing, gemstone markups and appraisals. Although this book is a little out of date, it is an excellent resource for beginners.

Free Trade Under Fire
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (April, 2002)
Author: Douglas A. Irwin
Average review score:

Necessity to arguing
Doesnt it always seem that your friends subscribe to the wrong views, and you to the right one? Well, at least for me it is. Whether your pals are from the anarchist wing or the Pat Buchanan camp, or even deviate just a little from your (correct) free trade stance, you should read this book. And even if you believe in the unholy stance of skepticism of free trade , you should read it too, for "The Economist" said that if this book doesnt convince anti-free traders, nothing will; so go ahead and test your faithfulness.

I am not an economist, and I hate reading economics text books filled with useless jargon. Before reading some great books, economics was as complicated as chemistry, physics or calculas to me. But after reading a few books, "Lexus and the Olive Tree", "Mystery of Capital" and "Peddling Prosperty", I realized that it isn't that complicated, its just the economists who create this aura of an esoteric subject.

This book is written in simple language, but when it does use phrases that regular people don't understand, he does something rare - he explains their meaning.

This is an excellent book, but only after reading The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Tom Friedman's book is the main weapon in my debating arsenal, and "Free Trade Under Fire" book gives me a large cache of ammunition, as do Peddling Prospery (or anything else by Paul Krugman like Pop Internationalism, another MUST read), and Henrando de Soto's masterpiece "The Mystery of Capital"(dont even look at his "Other Path", it is simplified and better argued in this "Mystery").

Highly Recommended

Reading This Book Will Make You Smarter
I have had the honor of having the author of this book as a professor in college. Not surprisingly he teaches classes dealing with international trade. All I can say is that he is an economist of the highest order and that he is capable of taking some extrodinarily difficult concepts and explaining them with a level of clarity that make them seem obvious. He takes this teaching approach to his book, making it both intelligent and approachable. If you ever actually wanted to know anything about international trade and even be able to discuss in a relevant manner the points at hand, read this book. You will be smarter for having done so.

Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (April, 1987)
Authors: Maurice Hinson and Irwin Freundlich
Average review score:

This is the pianist's bible.
Hinson's book is the best (and possibly the only) comprehensive list of all piano music out there today. Organized by composer, the Guide offers brief descriptions of all piano music by that composer, who publishes it, and how difficult it is to play.

I would be lost without this reference book. It's given me scores of ideas for new repertoire over the years and has saved me from wasting time on others. It's also sent me on many exciting library music stack searches, trying to locate out-of-print music.

Thank you, Mr. Hinson. I eagerly await your updated version of this fine book.

Simply the best piano music "catalog" in existence!!!
If any music has ever been published, you will find it very easily here

Irwin Shaw Short Stories: Five Decades
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (January, 1983)
Author: Irwin Shaw
Average review score:

Wonderful Stories, Diverse Settings and Characters
I have read all the stories in this collection, many more than once. Irwin Shaw is now neglected. A writer of promise before the War, he was gradually seduced after the War by the money available for rather poor potboiler novels needed to maintain his expensive Swiss lifestyle. However, his short stories (largely completed by the late 1950s) are so satisfying. They range from criminals in Brooklyn in the 1930s to upper class English skiers in Switzerland. They reflect many of the primary social and international issues involving twentieth century America (Shaw was born in 1900). Shaw was never an experimental writer, but a "realist" who wonderfully describes the settings and people of his stories. His stories are plot-driven with great characterization. They are less dark than those of John O'Hara (with whom he is in some respects comparable).

The few stories in this volume that don't "work" are the absurdly comic. The majority that do work are of the reactions of people to the political and social events of their times. A personal favorite: the very stylish "Man with the French Wife" involving the people of the title on a trip to France immediately post Algerian war, the husband's growing jealousy over his French wife's apparent involvement in some way with a Frenchman he sees on the street. Anyone would love these stories; you'll want more than the 60 or so in this volume.

Wonderful
This collection of Irwin Shaw's short stories is a wonder, from beginning to end. Stories run the emotional gamut, from sad and ironic to joyful and delightful. Shaw is a master at exploring ethical and moral delimmas in story form. It's too bad this book is now out of print, but it, or most of the stories in it, should be available in other formats.

It's About Time: America's Imprisonment Binge
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (14 June, 2000)
Authors: James Austin and John Irwin
Average review score:

Brilliant Research
ITS ABOUT TIME co-authored by Austin and Irwin, based on cutting edge research,
is the single most important book on the problems with American imprisonment. The authors use orginal research
to discuss the imprisonment binge, who goes to prison, imprisonment of children and women, private prisons,
doing time, super max, release, and three strikes and you're out. The book has been widely adopted for
both undergraduate and graduate courses at universities across the country. This is the book every lawmaker should read and consider before they vote to spend another dime of the taxpayers money on new prison construction. The research demonstrates that the dramatic increase in prison population is predicated on the imprisonment of individuals for petty crimes, drug offenses, and technical violations of probation and parole. Meanwhile, the inner-city schools of America are denied adequate funding, the streets are no safer, and millions of children wait for the parents to return home from prison.

I highly recommend this book for the truth about prison.
At last I have found a book which takes a realistic look at the problems of crime and prison. I taught Texas inmates for eight years during the recent prison expansion. People were usually surprised when I told them how much I enjoyed teaching inmates. The longer I worked in prison, the more I became concerned about the misinformation, based on fear instead of fact, which the public had been receiving from the news media and politicians. In order for our society to survive, we must stop reacting emotionally and start thinking rationally about solutions which will make a lasting difference in a positive way. Prison expansion in the United States has cost taxpayers millions of dollars for the buildings alone. But the price in human terms is far greater. This book is essential reading for every citizen who is concerned about how our government is spending tax dollars. Lorna Rios

Lucy Crown
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (February, 1983)
Author: Irwin Shaw
Average review score:

One of the best...
More than anything else, this book was Irwin Shaw's attempt at revealing the fragility of the goodness of good people, and for exploring the futility of making the distinction. One of the best books I have read. Definitely recommended.

This is one of the best books I've ever read!
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a true story of love and loss. It is hard to believe a man wrote this story. Lucy Crown makes a terrible mistake that alters her entire life. Somehow she finds the strenght to deal with her pain. You can feel Lucy Crown. This is one of the few books I have read many times. Excellent summer reading
